Missing “Destination folder” on upload document form

When uploading documents into a document library with folders, you normally see the following screen:

On one of our sites the Destination Folder was not available. After some investigating I found that the site where it didn’t work, was created using the “Blank site” template. After some research I found a similar issue on the net.

Since we used the “Blank site” template, some features do not get activated by default.

I found out that the feature that is responsible for the “Destination Folder” is the “Metadata Navigation and Filtering” feature.

After activating the solution, the Destination Folder became available. Note that if you turn this feature off, existing libraries will be able to select a destination folder, as where newly created document libraries will not be able to use this feature.

  1. Hi Ton,

I have just created a site using the “Blank site” template. The only features that I have activated are:
    – Metadata Navigation and Filtering
    – Team Collaboration Lists

But maybe this is depending on the template you use. I have only tested this with Document libraries, so that might be another difference.

  2. I have the option of the “Destination Folder” however when I select “Choose Folder” it does not list the folder that I created within my doc library. Do you know how to change this?

    • Hi Ria,

      Thanks for your feedback.
So far, I haven’t been able to reproduce this issue.
It may have something to do with too long URL/foldername/nested folders.

What happens if you manually enter the URL of your folder, does it upload correctly?
For instance if you have a folder called “FolderA”, enter /FolderA in the folder box, and see what happens.

  3. In my case Metadata Navigation and Filtering Feature was activated and the Destination folder option was still missing. I deactiated and activated the feature and the option appeared. Great post!
